Essential Tire Care Tips
Your tires are all that stand between the road and your car, which is why it’s important to stay up to date on their maintenance. To keep your tires in working order, we’ve put together these essential tire care tips.
Tire Pressure
The pressure of your tires can influence the way you drive. Under-inflated tires can cause irregular tire wear and internal damage, potentially causing a tire blow out. Over-inflated tires are more likely to be damaged when hitting an obstacle. Because of this, it’s important that you monitor your tires’ pressure regularly.
How to Check It
Checking tire pressure requires a tire gauge, so make sure you have one so you can keep up with your routine checks. See what the pressure number is and make sure it matches the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) that is outlined in the owner’s manual. Don’t forget to check the spare tire, too. You should check all of your tires at least once a month after your car has been parked for three hours.
Tire Tread Depth
A tire’s tread is what gives it traction on the road, especially when the weather is bad. If tires are bald without much tread, you’re more likely to lose your connection with the road while driving.
How to Check it
There are multiple ways to check that a tire’s tread is enough. Every tire has built-in tread wear indicators, also known as wear bars. When these bars are flush with your tire’s tread, then it’s time to get the tire replaced. Another way to check your tire’s tread is to do the penny test. Take a penny and stick it with Lincoln’s head pointing down into the tread groove. If Lincoln’s head is fully exposed, it means you need new tires.
Tire Rotation
When you drive your vehicle, it will wear down certain tires more than others. For instance, if your Honda is front-wheel drive, its front tires will wear quicker than its rear ones. Because of this, it’s important to have your tires rotated every 5,000-8,000 miles.
